Asheville, North Carolina

On a recent business trip to Asheville North Carolina, our work team flew from Chicago, IL to Charlotte, NC; a quick 1-1/12 hour flight. Southwest Airlines flys direct to Charlotte, putting you in a great position to reach Asheville in about 2 hours by car. The muted dusty blue-gray mountain views from the plane, prepares you for the beauty you are about to see once you are on the ground.

After several days of hard work, our team decided we needed a break and decided in our “off hours” to explore some of the natural wonders of this beautiful state has to offer.

On our last day, we took to the mountains, planning our pathway along the Blue Ridge Mountain Parkway; to stop at several vistas along the way to our dinner destination. Luckily, our plan set us on our way close to the golden hour, making the the views of the mountains more spectacular than expected. With each stop we made, the elevation at every viewing location increased and views became more jaw dropping. You can safely pull off the road at each of these locations that are clearly (marked by name and elevation). A map will be attached at the end of this post.

Pisgah Forest

Within the Pisgha Mountains was a highly recommended place to have dinner; Pisgha Inn, roughly 45 minutes from Asheville. Situated roughly 5,725 feet above sea level, this inn provides excellent views of the area, offering lodging, lunch or dinner at the restaurant and a charming gift shop. Adirondack chairs face the mountain view and a beautiful steel-cable deck with granite ledges wraps around the back of the inn for relaxing conversation and epic photo opportunities.

Pisgah Inn Vista

Dinner was excellent. The salmon dinner and quail are highly recommended and their desserts are just as delicious.

At the time of this post, the inn is open April through October, but please call to check before making the drive. Also, dinner reservations are recommended, as they seat the inn guests before walk-ins.

Allen Centennial Garden – Madison, WI

IMG_2730IMG_2799 IMG_2747On my recent visit to the Allen Centennial Garden in early October of 2018, the garden was still full of color and texture, despite the cooler temperatures. This little gem is located on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. The hustle and bustle of student life seems to disappear the moment you step past the wrought iron gate.

Admission to the garden is free. Street parking is hard to find, but a parking lot, a few yards away and across from the tennis courts, has a nominal $2.00 fee.

Themed gardens include; English, Japanese, French, Italian, shade, edible, pond, and a Victorian garden. A printed map is available for a self-guided visit.

This is a definite must see if you are a garden lover. A slow stroll through the grounds can be accomplished in under a half hour.

On Your Way to the Louvre

When traveling through Paris; the most romantic city in the world, you might miss this little gem as you make your way to the Louvre. Nearly every tourist wants to rush to this museum to see greatest masterpieces of art ever created by man, but nestled in-between the Louvre Museum and Place de la Concorde (1st arrondissement), you will discover Le Jardin des Tuileries. Created in the French formal garden style by Andre Le Norte, the gardener of King Louis XIV in 1664, this public garden gives the tired traveler a point of respite with a spectacular view. Pull up a green metal chair to the edge of the large round fountain pond, put your feet up on the ledge and relax! The locals bring a bottle of wine, bread and cheese to enjoy while chatting about the events of the day. This point of relaxation gives one a chance to enjoy the giant Ferris wheel in the Place de la Concorde and the massive details of the majestic Louvre buildings. Rest your feet here and get ready to see the greatest art show on earth. The Jardin des Tuileries itself contains statues of Rodin and Giacometti and is free to the public.2016-04-13-19-01-09 2016-04-13-19-10-36crpdbw 2016-04-13-19-11-43 2016-04-13-19-13-54 2016-04-13-19-14-00crpd 2016-04-13-19-21-48

Growing in all the right Places

IMG_2546Many years ago, as I commuted to work, daily I would pass an abandoned white farmhouse. The very tired and broken down free-standing home, all alone in an abandoned field, seemed to be destined to meet the wrecking ball and soon to be replaced by a new shopping mall. Fast forward years later, upon a shopping trip to the Growing Place (Aurora, IL location) did I realize I was walking through this old farmhouse. Now filled with lovely treasures for the home and garden, this house feels cozy and quaint. This beautiful old home, built in the 1860′s had been moved from its original location to this peaceful oasis to live out the rest of its life. Surrounded by flower beds, birdbaths and wind chimes, instead of the cornfields it once tamed, I smile knowing it survived and hope it will be around for another 100 years.

The Growing Place is not Giverny, but you will be transformed to a distant place the moment you walk through the gated picket fence. Your senses will be greeted by the sound of water dripping off the edge of a bird bath and the soft repetitive chopping sound of a shovel lightly hitting the soil. The din of bird songs is louder than the voices of the staff. Almost immediately, your creative juices begin to flow as you walk through the garden beds and take in the full color display that summer has to offer. If you plan to visit, make sure you stop by mid-July to get the full impact this place has to offer. Maybe you are in need of a master gardener, a library nook chalked-full of nothing but garden books, or just a place to relax and unwind. The help is usually working hard and tending to the plants, but the knowledgeable staff is always willing to help. On my last trip, I learned not to plant Peonies too deep in soil and not to cover the pink nodes on the stem, or they will not bloom.

Whether you stopped by the Growing Place to plan your garden for next year, get ideas on how to expand your garden this year, or you just wanted to get lost in this insulated pocket of nature for a few hours, you have come to the right place. “Idea Gardens” are positioned throughout the property to help you expand your creativity. Moonlit, Shade, Rock and Formal Gardens are designed to walk around, smell and touch. Garden art is endless and pots in every color and size are available. Explore this oasis of color and get your green thumbs shaking with excitement!

A Night for Pupparazzi

Last night was the exciting Black Cat Ball of the Naperville Area Humane Society. Animal representatives from the NAHS shelter, like Tuck, a five month old Australian Cattle Dog mix and Fred the Tuxedo cat, were walking the red carpet. With cameras clicking and bow ties on, these shelter animals were enjoying all of the attention and hoping to find a forever home through adoption.

The Wheaton Arrowhead Golf Club was a perfect setting for this evening’s event. The golden hues of the trees and the spectacular views of the course were a splendid backdrop for nearly 300 guests to converge, all for the sake of rescuing the animals. Silent and live auctions, along with cocktails, dinner and dancing, made for an unforgettable night of fundraising.

If you are interested in adopting wonderful animals like Tuck or Fred, please visit the Naperville Area Humane Society’s webpage. Over the past 25 years, NAHS has served over 20,000 animals, bringing them back to health and finding them loving homes.

Puppie Katz Sweating with Olympic Fever!

Is this not the cutest little Olympic fan you have ever seen? The Puppie Katz are my favorite little animal shelter adoption ambassadors. Baron von Corgi has a dream of becoming the Queen’s next household pet. For now, all he can do is talk about his cousins, who made the London Olympic opening ceremony with James Bond, a hit at the palace!

Baron says…

“Baron von Corgi here…just to remind everyone to cheer for your favorite country’s athletes! I was born in Germany, but now call London my home! We are so proud to be hosting the 2012 Olympics! I will be watching both countries reach for Olympic glory!

As always, the Puppie Katz message is “Opt to Adopt”…worldwide! We love to see all shelter animals find forever homes both here and abroad! Curl up with your favorite pet and watch the gold come home!”

The Puppie Katz roam the globe giving hope and cheer to a cats and dogs who need to be adopted into safe and loving homes.

Hugs and Kisses

I’m in love again! The other day, Adagio Teas in Naperville, IL was offering tea samples outside in carafes. As I stopped to take a taste, the carafe was empty, but the smell was divine. I went inside and asked if they had any more tea for sampling. Kindly, the sales associate offered to make me a new pot of tea if I cared to wait. Of course! While waiting,  I found a packet of my favorite Midnight Earl Grey I raved about last year…but I also found a wonderful new selection of teapots, cups and accessories every tea aficionado can’t live without.

A new pot of tea was ready. I was poured a cup of Hugs and Kisses. This is when I fell in love, again. A combination of rooibos, rose petals, cornflowers, vanilla, almond, cream and caramel flavor hit my pallet and I was sold! Smooth and dreamy…all of the way down. This blend is made by Adagio Teas and is contained in a beautiful rose covered tin. Perfect for a gift or self indulgence.

I encourage all you shopinistas and travelers out there to stop in at Adagio Teas if you are in the Naperville area. Their customer service goes above and beyond and warms you inside and out! Happy Valentine’s Day to all of my treasure and travel seekers.

Orchids

Villa Park, IL might not be the hot spot for tourist travel, but you will feel like you have been to the tropics in one quick visit to Hausermann’s. Once you step through the door, you will be in orchid heaven. Miles upon miles of orchids fill the greenhouses – every color and variety you can imagine. Hausermann’s hothouses are brimming with some of the most beautiful orchids I have ever seen in my life, including orchid containers, food and medium. I was most fascinated by the orchid nursery…where all of the future beauties are being “birthed”. Hausermann’s fall sale is on from Nov. 10th -13th. Seminars in orchid growing are offered as well as an online catalog for shopping and tips for keeping your orchids alive. Stop by and find a little treasure to brighten your home for the winter months ahead.

Bean There Done That

If your travels bring you to the windy city of Chicago, take time to see the plethora of world class outdoor art. The Chicago Architecture Foundation offers an excellent walking tour of the Picasso, Chagall, Calder, and Dubuffet sculptures adorning the city’s various plazas.

On Michigan Avenue, Millennium Park is home to one of the most visited works of public art, Cloud Gate by artist Anish Kapoor. Watching the reaction of the people around the sculpture is almost as enjoyable as viewing the piece itself. Cameras continuously click on this part fun-house mirror, bean-shaped object. Spectacular reflections of the city’s amazing architecture reflect from the highly polished silver surface. To view “The Bean”, walk one city block north of the Art Institute of Chicago…and yes, bring your camera!
